Freepia on SourceForge.net

Postby Shai » Tue Nov 04, 2003 10:18 pm

Dear Freepia community,

I've taken the initiative to try our ability to go on SourceForge with the Freepia project. It's kind of new to me and I need your help. Using such a great tool like SourceForge is a bit overwhelming I must say.

Nonetheless, I want Freepia to be a SourceForge project for two main reasons:

1) Project management.
2) Publicity.

I'll try and address these here in short:

One is to manage the project with all the tools that SourceForge can and does provide a/the project. Such tools as Admin, Home Page, Forums, Tracker, Bugs, Support, Patches, RFE, Lists, Tasks, Docs, News, CVS and Files.

Two is to provide a better public awareness of Freepia as a project and at the same time, try and lure new help for the project. Help does not always mean in the development way, it can also be people using Freepia and reporting bugs and speaking out.

I cannot do this alone. This will not work out if I can't get help from the Freepia current users.

I'll start out with something small, web site. If you think you can help us make a good web site on sf.net being the host, then please email/pm me.

Thoughts? Ideas? Let me know and/or reply here.

Away we ride to a bigger, brighter and multimedia future :)

Shai

P.S.
The poll will stick for 30 days from today.

As discussed previously I'm trying to sort out a few things with Freepia but due to work issues it's taking longer than planned. The three main things I intend to sort out are:
LIRC support for Hauppauge PVR cards.
PVR support (freepia video recorder, anyone?)
xmltv support (TV listings, yay!).

I'll keep you informed as I make progress. At the moment I'm in the process of replacing the PVR-250 I have with the PVR-350, as soon as that is complete the LIRC work can continue (has ANYONE got LIRC to work with this card?!?), I have the majority of the PVR functionality working but I need to package it all together and then integrate it with freepia itself.

xmltv is easy, I just need to integrate it.

Cheers,
Stuart

sourceforge

Why not? I can't really think of a negative aspect by using Sourceforge.
Using the sourceforge page as an 'official' frontpage would be good, because the current Freepia website is quite awful. As you said, it offers a lot of useful tools that can help the development of freepia.
However, there are stories about the degradating service of sourceforge. For example: FFMPEG's CVS has been moved away from sourceforge.
An alternative service provider could be Savannah ( savannah.gnu.org ).

Hello Heiko, Hello shai,
as you know, i had many ideas concerning freepia the last weeks.
So here are the parts i want to do:
- build a suitable homepage
- implementing diskless-booting over network or USB-Stick
- implementing an id3-tag-sorting algorithm, for all mp3's he finds (e.g. a directory structure with linked mp3's depending on genre, artist, etc....)

For part one i need furter information from you, shai ;-)
For the rest i am in contact with heiko.
